TV Review: Supernatural Episode 1.14

Tuesday, February 07, 2006

From WB: Sam (Jared Padalecki) has a premonition in which a man is killed, but the murder is made to look like a suicide. Sam convinces Dean (Jensen Ackles) that they must investigate the case, but the two are puzzled when they fail to find anything that indicates that the death was supernatural in nature. That is, until they find out that Max (Brendan Fletcher), the reclusive son of the first victim, has been using his recently acquired power of telekinesis to kill the family members that once abused him. Sam also discovers Max's mother was killed by the same fiery demon that took his own mom.

My Rating: 4 out of 4

On this week's fresh episode of Supernatural titled Nightmare, Sam's premonitions take on a life of their own and worsen in intensity. After he sees the death of a man in his dreams, he and Dean journey to Michigan to try to stop his dream from becoming a reality. His death, although made to look like a suicide, was actually a murder. Using the man's license plate and a cop's identity, Sam is able to find where the man lives. They arrive an hour after the man is found dead in his garage, the victim of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sam feels responsible for the man's death because he wasn't able to arrive in time to stop it. Dean and Sam stick around to talk to the family and search the house the next day. They pose as priests in order to get inside the house. Once inside, they talk to the family. They talk to the mother, and she tells the brothers that the son is the one that found their father. Sam goes to talk to Max, while Dean takes a walk through the house.

When Dean finds nothing odd in the house and Sam is unable to find anything connected to the house or land, it looks like they might have a normal suicide on their hands. However, Sam has another premonition. This time when he is awake and the pain from it hurts him a great deal. This time he sees the death of the first man's brother. Sam and Dean try to get to him in time, but they are unable to prevent his death. They once again talk to Max and his family, and nothing turns up unusual. However, Sam knows something is up.

Sam and Dean then decide to look into the family history a bit more, and when they interview a man that used to live next door to the Miller family, they learn that the family has a very jaded history. Max used to be abused by both his father and uncle. His step mother used to stand by and watch it happen. Max's birth mother had died. While talking to the man, Sam has another premonition. This one of the step mother's death at Max's hand.

Sam and Dean rush back to the Miller house in order to stop the woman's death, and they arrive just in time. However, Max notices Dean's gun, and he uses telekinesis to take the gun from Dean. He then holds the three of them hostage. Sam tries to talk to Max, and he learns that Max's mother died in the same manner that his own mother did. Sam believes the two of them are connected in some manner. They both have special powers. Sam has his psychic ability, and Max has his telekinetic powers.

Sam does try to reason with Max, even telling him about their possible connection. At first, it appears that it may work, but soon Sam is locked in a closet, and Max is after his step mom. Dean stands in between her and in another premonition, Sam sees Dean die after a gun shot to the head. His anger at seeing this helps him break out of the closet, using his own burst of telekinetic power. He is able to get in to the room just in time to stop Max from shooting Dean. however, Max then turns the gun on himself and commits suicide. Thus ends this case.

Another great episode of Supernatural. This series gets better each week, and it is sure to be included on the CD line-up next fall once the WB makes the move to merge with PUN. Each and every week, we learn more and more about the two Winchester brothers. Sam's powers are definitely developing and expanding as the series progresses, and the more they develop the more it looks like he might be the center and cause of the death's of both his mother and Jessica. we have another all new episode of this series to look forward to next week.
